PostSubject: What is Eclectic Homeschooling   Tue Apr 24, 2007 5:55 am

If the eclectic homeschooler had a motto, it might be "Homeschooling is not school at home." That means in homeschooling, don't try to recreate a school atmosphere.

"The methods and resources they select to use are chosen to further the educational goals they have for their children. Their children's temperaments, gifts, and learning styles are all taken into account in determining how they will homeschool and what they will use. " From http://eho.org/homeschool_prep/article.asp?articleid=1&resourceid=69

Instead of using a packaged curriculum that was designed to be used in a Christian school setting, the eclectic homeschooler will search out the best approach for each child in each subject. An elemenatary or middle schooling eclectic might use unit studies for science, real books for history, a math workbook, a grammar guide and copywork for English and hands on projects of every kind.

The eclectic high schooler might use various textbooks, dvds, computer programs, real books or even dual enrollment college class. If the science textbook isn't working for the student, the eclectic will search out one that will. If one child thrives on structure, that child might well use a packaged curriculum while the sibling doesn't. Whatever suits each child best.

It takes more time to plan the school year, but the eclectic will be more satisfied by tailoring the education of his or her child.
