| The Early Works Homeschool class schedule for 2007-2008
Homeschool History Academy
The Homeschool History Academy is a selection of programs created just for homeschool students. The programs, held at the Early Works Museum Complex in Huntsville, are based on a variety of history topics and are designed for parents and children to participate together. Academy classes are held from 10am until 12pm.
Each two-hour session includes:
. Approximately 30 minutes of learning lab instruction, . 1 1/2 hours of active and hands-on activities, and related take- home worksheets with vocabulary and suggestions for more in-depth study.
Fee is $10 per participant per session; Early Works members are $8.
Each participant must pre-register, full payment required.
Classes close when a maximum student enrollment of 30 is reached. (We reserve the right to cancel the class, up to one week before the lab begins, if a minimum number of 10 students is not reached.) Class times are 10am - 12pm

2007-2008 Schedule
August 20: In A Bind: Calligraphy: Beautiful Writing of the Times Participants will discover the art and history of this beautiful writing technique and practice some of the many styles of the craft.
During a visit to the Village post office, students learn how letter writing was an important connection to the outside world.

August 27: Civil War Medicine
Participants will gain an understanding of medical techniques utilized during the Civil War and their connection to modern medicine. Students and their families will interact with a Civil War battlefield nurse.
-- Class held at the Historic Huntsville Depot.
September 10: Chores of Yore: Harvest Time, Gardening and Dairy work Participants will help the Village with autumn chores, such as scarecrow building, stringing beans and working the apple press and interact with Village workers as they prepare the Village for the fall season.

September 17: Native American History and Culture Participants will learn about the different tribes that first called Alabama home. They will examine objects of Native American daily life and study customs, art and games of these first settlers.

October 1: Homespun Huntsville History
Participants will learn about Huntsville's rich history and about the trades of the candle maker and spinner. Hands-on activities include weaving, candle dipping, carding and drop spindling.

October 15: Coming to America
Participants will explore immigration patterns in America as they meet the Statue of Liberty, take a citizenship test and learn their responsibilities as American citizens.

November 5: Do you want to be a President?
What are the qualifications for becoming a President of the United States? What does he do up there in the White House? Find out and then cast your ballet for the President of your choice.

November 19: Express Train to the North Pole Already a tradition for many families, this program brings history and literature together through the storytelling of The Polar Express. Crafts and a hot chocolate snack are included.

February 4: Alabama Statehood
Statehood came to Alabama in 1819, after much debate and decision making. Participants will experience the democratic process and learn about the journalist and printer John Boardman. Hands-on activities include running the press and learning to write with the quill pen.

February 11: Journey to Freedom
Discover the hardships slaves endured and their flight to freedom through the Underground Railroad network.
-- Class held at EarlyWorks Children's History Museum.
February 25: Passages: Historic Preservation This program provides students with real life experiences in historic preservation. Learn about the restoration of the Historic Huntsville Depot and participate in a preservation scavenger hunt.

March 10: Trades of the Times- Blacksmith, Tinsmith, Cabinetmaker Participants will learn about the life of an apprentice as they meet Village trades people. This program provides the basis for strengthening vocabulary, comparing trades and careers and promoting decision making.

March 24: Industry and Inventors
Find out about the sweeping changes of the Industrial Revolution, work the assembly line, play the Inventor's Challenge and dig for coal and precious minerals.

March 31: Walk, Ride or Fly: Getting Around in our Community How do trains, planes and automobiles affect our city? Explore the evolution of transportation as you board trains and man a vintage fire truck.
-- Class held at the Historic Huntsville Depot.
April 7: Out of the Frying Pan and into the Fire Participants will explore the mysteries of the 1800's kitchen and open hearth cooking. The economy, supply and demand and individual resourcefulness are explained as participants identify tools of the trade and make a Village recipe.

April 14: The Civil War Soldier
Using the actual graffiti left by soldiers, participants will gain first-hand knowledge of how the Civil War touched Huntsville.
Activities include the story of General Mitchell and the Union takeover of the Depot and experiencing camp life of a soldier.

May 12: For What Ails You?
Before the pharmacist the doctor settlers used a homemade herbal remedy to cure their ails. Learn about how those concoctions were made and make your own hands-on projects from the herb garden.

May 19: Ridin' The Rails
Learn the importance of train travel and the function of a passenger depot. Participate in a tour of the Historic Huntsville Depot and grounds and learn the history of the Depot's own stem locomotive and train cars.
